A coffee with Martinike Tovar, audit trainee

We chat to Martinike as part of a new series celebrating our employees and the careers they are building with Crowe. Throughout the series we talk to staff about what it is like to work with our firm. They outline the career opportunities that Crowe offers, our unique firm culture and the CSR and social programmes that staff run.

What was your primary degree?
Accounting, back in Mexico.

Before working at Crowe, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I started working as an accounting intern as soon as I started college but before when I was in high school I worked as a tourist guide in a scientific museum in my city. I was on charge of the school groups guided visits. I really enjoyed the experience, everyday was super fun and I learned lots of interesting random facts about science and technology.

What is it about a career in accountancy that appeals to you?
The fact that you have to be always updating your knowledge to be able to keep up with the industry. I like to push my brain a little bit further every time in order to achieve new challenges and a career in accountancy clearly needs this willing to be training yourself all the time.

What does your job entail?
I’m currently working in the Audit department. I support my colleagues with the audits performed to companies in different sectors. Depending on the type of audit performed, the tasks might change but the main one is to review the accounting records of the entities in order to ensure they are adequate and they comply with the relevant legislation.

Describe a typical day
Working in Audit department means not having a typical day. Whether you are working at the office or on site, every day is different.

I usually get to the office wherever I am working at, go through my emails and start working on the company I’ve been assigned performing audit testing or drafting sets of financial accounts.

We are assigned to audit a different company in average every week, this helps a lot to avoid routine as all the companies are fairly different and need different types of analysis.

What three words would you use to describe your role?
Interesting, challenging and methodical. The last one doesn’t mean boring.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?
Working in a different language. Audit itself is challenging but performing my job in a different language has encouraged me to give an extra shot of effort.

What do you like most about your job?
Right now what I like the most is applying to real life what I’ve been learning at college during the last 2 years. I like to think that every single sentence I’m reading at school is improving my capacity to perform my job in a better way.

How did you find working and studying at the same time?
Not too hard. Exams make so much more sense when everything you are trying to learn and memorise are your day to day tasks at work.

Also the study leave period is a great opportunity to get yourself ready for sitting the exams when its time to do so.

What is different about working at Crowe?
The close relationship you have with managers and partners which allow you too learn directly from them. Everybody is always willing to teach you whatever you need or want to learn.

How has Crowe helped you in your career development?
I’ve learned so much during the time I’ve been working for the firm. Things going from improving my personal skills like working under pressure to the knowledge and tips my colleagues have passed to me while working together.
